Cold air and rain splattered about inside as the guard peered in and observed. ‘What has been your business, where are you going?’ he asked.

The rain noticeably soaked his otherwise ineffective jacket; the brim of his hat trickled like a broken drain pipe. ‘I am taxi driver, these three men are farmers and have asked to be taken to their farm over the border.’ The guard looked puzzled; it was expected after all – why would farmers need a taxi?

Saxby turned to their language. ‘Our truck broke down outside of Dongcheng. We walked to the district to get a taxi so we could come back with another truck and repair it,’ he explained.
